Job for Tech Writer (Documentation and How to Guides)

We are looking for writer responsible for creating and writing various types of user documentation, including how-to guides, references, manuals, cheat sheets, or instructions.

Specific Tasks

Over-arching Requirement

Explain technical ideas in language that average readers can comprehend.

Write

Create user documentation describing how to use Sumac: how-to guides, instruction manuals, training videos, and reference materials in language that is easy for an average user (with only high school education) to understand.
Select and create photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to help illustrate instructions in documentation explaining how to use Sumac.
Create marketing and sales documentation: website content, product announcements, marketing brochures, demo scripts, class materials, and research articles related to non-profit technology for internal and external newsletters (see sumac.com/library for examples).
Write and organize material according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.

Edit

Edit (proofread for grammar and spelling), standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers.
Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, design and format, content, and methods of distribution.
Update existing documentation.

Process

Ensure that documentation processes are properly integrated into product development, marketing, sales, and support processes.
Interview software development personnel and try pre-release versions of our software to learn about new features, operating procedures, and other details, so that you can document them before they are released to our customers.
As our software changes, determine which previously published materials need to be changed.
Suggest changes to products and processes to make them more easily documented and understood.
Ensure that all released versions of documentation are organized and archived appropriately.

Required Qualifications

At least two years of experience doing technical writing for a software company.
A facility with the English language that is comparable to native speakers.
University degree in a field that demands a lot of carefully reasoned and presented writing (it is a must).
Live in the area with excellent internet connection

Desirable Qualifications

Experience working with or for a charity.
Experience providing tech support
